The current front runner is an Audi wagon. The B7 teeters right on the edge, with some people asking ridiculous amounts of money for a manuel avant. I live in CO, so the AWD is a legit advantage, but I’m open to suggestions, no matter how crazy, as long as it can baby (i.e. has room for two car seats) and costs less than $10k.

Saab 9-2x? I’m sure the back seat can fit a few car seats. And your family will see you as sensible for getting a Saab. But make it an Aero and you’ve got a WRX pretending to be a family car.

Volvo 740 or 940 turbo. No AWD, but reliable, safe, and can be made to haul ass easily. Nobody suspects the Volvo. If you would prefer FWD for snow, get an 850 T5 wagon. Or, find my dream car, a 95.5 Audi S6 Avant. CO seems to have most of them, and while they’re hard to find, they’re usually well under $10k.

If it has to be an unreliable understeering wagon, you may as well go full retard and get a Lancia Thema SW with the 8.32 swap.
+
= Profit
Could just about be done for less than 10k.

This is a terrible idea. But definitely my favorite so far.

People try to sell the Subies for ridiculous amounts of money in CO, and they’re regularly beat to shit. It’s still on the list, but mainly as a last resort.

Didn’t know about this one. Daddy like.
EDIT: There’s even one for sale in Denver

from what I understand, the ‘06-’07 are more desirable as they have a strengthened angle gear (or something like that) that is less likely to strip, leaving the car FWD only when it fails.

I got a 2005 v70R for my little one.
great car.
as said before the 06-07 are more sought after but are a higher asking price; you can get the automatic for pretty cheap (what I did) just flush the gear box like 3 times and shouldn’t be a problem with it.

Also bonus thing if you have dogs there is a build in barrier

Your little one is precious. That Volvo has got to be the definition of “sleeper.” Definitely going on the list.

The B7 would be more reliable from what I’ve heard.

This works for me quite well right now but my boys, age 10 and 7, are starting to complain about leg room.

I currently drive a B7 A4 Avant, and live just outside of Denver, and, based on my experiences, it is the perfect car for the area. I think that is the right choice for you. I ran into the same problems finding one, and, in order to get one in my price range and with the engine I wanted (the 3.2 N/A, because its more reliable and I’m fighting to stay away from turbos), I had to drop the requirement for a manual unfortunately. I do regret that choice, so spend as long as you need to to find that option, it’ll be worth it. I don’t want to discredit anyone’s alternative suggestions, but I do think you are looking at the right car.
http://denver.craigslist.org/ctd/5033795806… If this one hasn’t had the timing belt done, you could probably get them to knock ~1500 off the price, and, if it has, I’d say its a good example. (plus dolphin gray is my favorite color on these) And a 3-spoke steering wheel out of a 2005.5 or 2006, or a 2007-2008 S-line will make the interior look way better, for a few hundred bucks more, max.

Yeah, I like the look a lot more than the Volvo as well. I’m actually not a horsepower freak, and am into VAG, so that’s why it’s at the top. I’ve heard the B7 fixed a lot of the electrical gremlins that the previous gen VAGs had, but I’m girding my loins even so, just in case.

It is almost perfect!

If you're getting the 2.0T motor, check the cam follower and camshaft for wearing. The follower sits between the HPFP and the cam and is supposed to 'glide'. It does, but slowly wears out and the piston from the HPFP punctures the follower and grenades the camshaft. FYI

+1, Subaru prices when I lived in NM were ridiculous (like 50% higher than east coast).
I'll find you a nice late model OBW H6 in the Philly area and you can drive it back ;)

regarding the grayed out post below about the cam follower...it is a fairly simple and and cheap maintenance item. Check it every 25,000-30,000 miles on a stock tune...10-15k miles if you have an aftermarket tune and/or upgraded HPFP.

My wife and I are in a similar boat - looking for a family hauler. Something a bit more fuel efficient though. I’ve been looking at a Mazda 5, Honda Insight or Chevy Volt. Probably not quite what you are looking for, though.

We looked at the 5 for my wife when the Vibe got totaled. I almost just went out and bought another Vibe, we liked it so much. Not the last gen though — they were terrible. I have heard that the Insight feels cheap inside. I’d buy a Volt, but not as my only car. If you don’t need to road trip in it, the Leaf is hella cheap used, even with ridiculously low miles. We’re thinking about expanding the family as well, so the A4 wagon is about as small as I want to go. I’m also pretty sick of cheap plastic interiors. I’d rather chase gremlins than have to look at the result of bean counter cost cutting for another four years or so.

Interesting about the Vibe - my sister-in-law has one. Her roof rack (which I’m guessing was a dealership installed option) is almost entirely rusted out, which kind of put a bad taste in my mouth. Given that we’re coming from a 2001 Cavalier, I think pretty much anything would be an upgrade, interior-wise.
I certainly wouldn’t sneeze at a Leaf. Getting one up here might be a bit tricky, though. I wonder how much it would cost to have one shipped up from California.
I do quite like the look of the A4. Someone down the street from us is selling one. The thought of German engineering scares me, though. If I had the time (and desire), I’d totally want to do a small block Chevy swap into it.

The engines are not the thing you need to worry about. Just about everything else though (electrical systems, transmissions, etc)

Well you’re a guy with kids so I’d hope so...
